First Try at HDR

We went to Jen and Shawn's wedding today. It really was an awesome wedding and it gave me a chance to try my hand at high dynamic range imaging (HDR). Now, granted, all I had was a Canon SD750 (a little point-n-shoot) without a tripod or anything… but I think the results are still pretty dang good for my first try. Check them out below… all I've done is taken bracketed exposures and run them through Photomatix. There's been no post-processing other than that.

This is a picture of the wedding guest favor. A glass of water refracted light from the windows behind me onto the label and the satin table cloth.

Here's the table centerpiece. It had some very bright candles, and light glowing in the water from the windows. The flowers were vibrant in color in real life, too.

And this was the reception hall. The wedding ceremony happened just outside the windows. My how that silverware sparkles!

Colorado Vacation

After 5 years of being married, we decided to actually take a real vacation. Some friends were getting married in Colorado and we have some family up there, so we decided to take a week and a half off work and enjoy our trip.

First to Dallas to meet with parents, then to Littleton to stay with family. We went down to the Garden of the Gods on Tuesday, then to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park from Wednesday to Friday. We snapped a few pics.

I totally cheated on this one. I actually put a monocular in front of my point-n-shoot camera's lens. Notice the black circle around the pic? I made my 3x zoom camera into a 21x zoom camera. I'm fairly impressed with the results, given how crappy a setup I used.

The unofficial results are in. My congratulations to Mick, Mike and Phyllis!

Well, I didn't win. I didn't really expect to. I was running against a popular incumbent and without any campaign expenses. To pull an upset like that would have been historic.

What did happen, though, was amazing to me. 249 votes were in my column. That means that 247 people (other than my household) voted for me. That is absolutely incredible to me. That 247 people either read about my thoughts on this website or saw me on TV or saw me at a neighborhood forum… and they liked what I had to say so much that they trusted me to make decisions for them? Wow. I'm truly honored. To those 247, whoever you are, I can't thank you enough.

Mick, Mike and Phyllis all won by taking roughly 70% of the vote in each race. My 249 votes accounted for about 6.5%.

In the next few days, I'll post my critique of the past two months – the things I've learned and the things I hope others consider in the future.

Again… My thanks to everyone that supported me, especially the 247.
